These photographs were taken during the GB Rowing Team Women and Lightweights Training Camp in Breisach, Germany about four weeks before the Olympic Regatta, as one of the team's High Performance Coaches explains.
"It's here we carry out our final 'Boot Camp' physical training before the pre-Olympic preparation camp. In Breisach the guys will train up to six hours a day for each of the 22 days we are out there.
"The photograph shows the crew at full reach ready to enter the water. They demonstrate excellent technique with the blades squared and close to the water, ready to execute the fine skill to enter the water and then put their physical power onto the face of the spoon. We need to be so accurate with that blade entry. It's like tyres on a car - however good we are and however big our engine, those four small blade faces are what keeps our grip on the water. Without enough grip we just slip through and it does not matter how strong we are. The skill required is so fine and quick, but so important for success and that's why we mount the SDR-SW20 on the hull. We can get close in shots at water level and ensure we are keeping that accurate grip, at all work intensities, in all conditions. The rowers can't see the blade out there and, at all but the lowest rates / speeds the coach can't really see it either - so step forward the SDR-SW20."
