While design, production and recycling are all crucial product life-cycle stages for Panasonic’s environmentally responsible business, the product use phase arguably has the most immediate impact on you - our customer, and on the environment. This is the energy consumption stage in the product’s lifecycle, the period when you own and use our products.

Now, as part of our European ‘eco ideas’ strategy for products, we are committed to making market leading products in terms of environmental performance. We rate environmental performance using a wide range of criteria, including global warming prevention (=energy efficiency), chemical substance management and resource efficiency. Panasonic products which pass this test are classified as “Superior Green Products”. Our target is to introduce 20 new market leading products within 2010, an aim that we are confident we’ll achieve.

‘eco ideas’ for fridges and washing machines
In March 2009, Panasonic extended its European product range with the introduction of fridge-freezers and washing machines. With their stylish design and user-friendly features, they are initially being introduced in the UK, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain with launch in other countries being planned.

With the introduction of fridge-freezers and washing machines in Europe, Panasonic is again reflecting its commitment to the environment. The NR-B30FX1 is our premium fridge-freezer model, the first A++ No-frost Fridge-Freezer. The exceptional energy efficiency was made possible by a clever combination of technological innovations such as inverter technology and the U-vacua vacuum insulation panel. As a result, the new fridge-freezers are much quieter than comparable models, while substantially thinner insulation walls provide greater storage capacity. Features such as the Vitamin-Safe compartment and the Hygiene Active system also considerably improve storage conditions, meaning that foodstuffs – especially fruit and vegetables – remain fresh and appetizing.

Panasonic has also introduced range of washing machines headed by a premium model, the NA-16VX1. Naturally they all meet the best EU-rated ‘A’ energy efficiency class; in fact they all have a power consumption 20% lower than that required to be ‘A’ rated. So like our fridge-freezers, they produce best value in terms of electricity use. Our washing machines also work faster and use less water. This outstanding ecologically compatible washing process is also the result of various Panasonic technological innovations. By tilting the drum 10 degrees, we have reduced the water levels needed in the drum. Together with inverter technology and 3D Sensor Wash, the movement of the drum can be controlled, ensuring optimal cleaning performance. And if that wasn’t enough, these next-generation washing machines are easier and more convenient to load and unload, and the controls are intuitive to use.
